Weekly Prayers for the Church Street Family
Week of June 21, 2023
Rev. Catherine Nance
On this night of Summer Solstice, I am inspired by the hymn writer, Kathleen Thomerson, and offer her words here ….
I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus.
God set the starts to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus!
I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus.
Clear Sun of Righteousness, shine on my path, and show me the way to the Father.
In him there is no darkness at all!
The night and the day are both a like.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God.
Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus!
[UMH #206, K. Thomerson, 1966]
O God of Light, with your voice you called forth a way for us to see out of the darkness. Your voice gives us a path and direction.
We thank you for the gift of creation which gives us a sense of rhythm, a way to keep time; we are thankful for both day and night. There is something healing, though, about the sun, Creator God! Thank you for the way you have ordered the planets. Thank you for scientists and astronomers who study the skies and help us to understand that we are not the center of the universe! Thank you for the creation of this planet that offers us life!
O God, for those who are experiencing darkness of any kind, reveal your light!
Darkness of despair, bring the light of hope!
Darkness of disease, shine your healing light!
Darkness of shame; bring redemption and release!
Darkness of sin, shine mercy!
Darkness of regret, shine new beginnings
Darkness of death, give us the assurance of eternal life.
We thank you for the extra bit of daylight today, O God!
May your light shine in us and through us!
May our living always reflect the Light of your Love!

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
