Event Details
Our Summer Lecture Series is back this July with a lecture series Methodism in the Holston Conference. The lecture series will be presented by Michael Feely, the Director of Missions and Congregational Care at Christ United Methodist Church in Chattanooga.
This year will include two lectures:
July 19 – “Who do you say that we are?”: Methodist narratives in Holston Conference and beyond
- We’ve been trying to explain ourselves in Holston since 1824. We’ll take a look at how we Methodists tried (and still try) to define ourselves through testimonies, religious newspapers, and even conference strategy plans. We’ll look at some of the memorable writers in Holston, including Parson Brownlow, R.N. Price, Sallie Crenshaw and Jane Merchant.
July 26 – Against the Grain: “contrary” Methodists in the Holston area who fought some uphill battles
- We will take a look at a few persons who felt called to challenge the prevailing culture, such as Bishop Gilbert Haven, James Axley, Dr. Aaron Rapking, and others.
These lectures will take place during the Sunday School hour, starting at 9:45 am in the Parish Hall. ALL Sunday School classes are welcome and invited to attend!
