Daily Prayers of the Church Street family

Pastor Jan

O Radiant One, we know your Holy Spirit resurrects and awakens everything that is. It is your empowering goodness that brings life to the seeds of our dreams. As we watch the blossoming earth outside our doors, we pray that you would rouse the sleeping grains of faith you planted within us so long ago, that they might mature tall and strong, becoming a giant tree, providing home and shelter to shade to each fainting traveler who chances to pass our way.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Spirit of Fire, burn away the chaff of our regrets and mistakes this day. We each carry memories of times when we disappointed ourselves, when we failed miserably, when we made life hard for loved ones, when we deceived those who counted on us. Perhaps you, in your grace, erased these missteps decades ago; but we humans continue to cling to shards of the past. With your cleansing flame, remove forever our bitter memories, freeing us to step more lightly on that fresh trail toward wholeness you are already creating for us.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Our hearts make room for thanksgivings, Holy One, for we know you are the author of all goodness. Praises be to you this day! And also we freely offer all the yearnings of our church family to you, for you alone hold the power to make all things new:

  • A faithful church servant celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday
  • An older couple offer gratitude for health and blessings God continues to send
  • Gratitude: a sister recovering from heart surgery is now at home in Lenoir City
  • Thankful that a son is soon to graduate from UT law school
  • Thanksgiving that the availability of virus test kits has increased
  • A mother who underwent emergency surgery on Saturday continues to improve
  • Please pray for confidence and easing of stress of small business owners and that financial recovery will come soon
  • Prayers for a dental worker who is anxious about returning to work
  • Young wife who is pregnant prays that businesses do not open too soon
  • For hope to fill the hearts of those who mourn this day
  • Wisdom for all involved in making decisions in opening of healthcare facilities next week, for judicious planning and guidance in keeping staffs and workers safe
  • A longtime saint of the church urges us to remember Jesus
  • Healing mercies and blessings for a sister suffering at home from advanced cancer
  • Comfort for loved ones nearing death, peace for their families who watch and wait

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

With all that we are and all that we hope to be, we offer these prayers with humble hearts in the name of the Christ, who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Pastor Jan

Creator of This New Day, made Holy through your Son’s resurrection, touch us with your mystery and your surprising hope. We enter this Sabbath, ready to see your power working through us in some bold new way. May we be watchful in the time ahead, lest we miss the hour of your arrival.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Forgive us, Good Lord, when our conversations turn into a litany of complaints, when our thoughts and our discussions reflect the colors of gloom and gray. Remind us that the world has a sufficient supply of moaning and criticism, and our grumbling only clutters the air. Bring your brightness to the dark corners of our souls, we pray, and help us to speak and live as people who trust in their Redeemer.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Still, it is true that you long to hear from your children. As the epistle writer taught: “Cast all your cares upon him, for he cares for you.” Therefore, we need not hesitate to bring our concerns into your presence, for you are aware that we long for stability, the absence of fear, the embrace of loved ones, freedom of movement within our community, gathering with our church friends, the regular paycheck. All these we bring to you, as well as the deepest needs voiced by our church family.

  • Thank you for prayers – man with brain bleed is now out of ICU
  • Homebound mother is grateful for all who send her cards and make her smile
  • Widow is thankful for her neighbor who brings her mail and her groceries
  • Gratitude: a friend only has one more week of total isolation
  • Family grieving death of a young adult son and family grieving death of a husband
  • Healing for an aging mother who had emergency surgery yesterday and for her daughter who worries
  • Blessing of all who are near death, peace for their loved ones who stand by
  • Prayers for a nephew (age 35) is in a coma, drug addiction; peace for his family
  • Continued protection for all healthcare workers and first responders
  • Prayers to sustain parents and family mourning the death of a beloved daughter
  • Prayers for strength and courage for a close friend who faces cancer surgery this week
  • Please pray for confidence and easing of stress of small business owners & that recovery will come soon

Take these, our deepest cares, we pray, and help us to feel you at work in each situation. Ours is not to know all things; yet we believe that every prayer uttered is worthy of your grace and is held in sacred trust in that holy realm.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Stand by us, Strengthening God, for you remain our anchor in these unsettling days.

And it is in the name of our risen friend Jesus that we offer our petitions:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Holy and Gracious One, you know us as people almost always in a hurry. In our rush, we forget to seek you. But in these moments, we ponder that ancient verse from the psalmist: “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of your wonderful works.” These words still ring true today, as we offer thanksgiving for the ways you have worked in our lives . . .

We feel your abundant love for us, and recall your myriad of favors, too numerous to calculate.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of Mercy and Healing, who always hears the cries of those in need, receive these petitions of your people who are troubled and those who have lost their way. Tend to those whom we carry closest to our hearts . . .

Turn your face, we pray, in the direction of all suffering ones. And sharpen our eyes that we might see beyond the cloudy mist to behold your rainbow through the rain.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

And give your assurance to each member of our church family, particularly these who have asked to be remembered:

  • Gratitude: a family celebrates the birth of a new grandniece in Virginia
  • Gratitude for the life of a loving husband; family returns him to Virginia for burial
  • Thanksgiving: staff and residents remain virus-free in a nearby nursing facility
  • A member is thankful for medications that cured strep-throat
  • One couple celebrates their 38th wedding anniversary
  • Prayers for a nephew (age 35) in a coma, drug addiction; peace for his family
  • Continued protection for all healthy first responders, and healing of all afflicted
  • For healing mercies for a friend in great pain from cancer
  • Healing and restoration for business owners who are stressed financially and emotionally
  • Comfort for family of a nephew who died Friday, addiction related (age 29)
  • Healing for a co-worker who suffered a brain bleed on Wednesday
  • Pray for a hospital administrator and his staff as they plan the opening of their facility in early May; that all might remain safe
  • Cousin in Kentucky nursing facility; he and 50 others are infected COVID-19; four have died
  • Wisdom for state and local governments as they decide to reopen businesses

Visit your people and pour out your strength and courage, that we might become a source of strength and courage to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Accept all our prayers this day, O Divine Flame; and when all other candles dim, grant that we may not forget your Son of Light, who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

From the rising of the sun, to the going down of the same, may Jesus Christ be praised! Lord, you know our faults even before we name them. You have heard our prayers offered these past weeks and you know what concerns us most deeply. Through the sacrifice of his life and the resurrection of your Son, we know that nothing is impossible for you. Christ has ripped apart the barriers that separate us from your love. And as you know us so well, and you love us so deeply, fill us all with hope, we pray, and grant us your peace.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Forgive us, O Loving Creator, when we don’t give ourselves permission to rest or time to stop and take in the glories you have placed in our midst. And forgive us also for not loving ourselves enough, for too often neglecting our own needs. Help us make time to remember that it was you who knit us together in our mother’s wombs and that we are wonderfully made. Send your Spirit among us this day, that we might receive the joy you intend for us.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

And as you taught us to reveal our innermost thoughts to you, we sincerely offer our gratitudes and our burdens, knowing they will be lovingly received:

  • Gratitude: A faithful member celebrates her latest cancer scans; she is progressing well & is given a reprieve from a harsh medication
  • Gratitude for monies donated thus far to help a family replace a roof
  • Thanksgiving: A member joyfully celebrates her final chemo treatment
  • Prayers for a cherished mother, newly diagnosed lung cancer
  • Pray for a hospital administrator and his staff as they plan the opening of their facility in early May; that all involved might remain safe
  • Prayers for a peaceful death for a beloved mother
  • Beloved uncle with COVID-19 and multiple complications
  • Continued protection for all healthy first responders and healing for those who contracted the virus while serving in the line of duty
  • That governments everywhere be prudent as they move toward reopening public businesses and spaces
  • Business owners who are stressed financially and emotionally – for healing and stability to come
  • Pray for a wife mourning the death of her husband on Wednesday
  • A young cousin very ill, prognosis is not promising and for his family

We sense your presence in each situation, O Gracious One. And in your own silent way, work your miracles among us.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Keep us bound together as one community, Faithful Lord, as the path that lies before us is indistinct; but we know our future is in your loving hands:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

O Caring One, we know that your presence is among us, even when we are not gathered in one place. You are ever listening, loving, and desiring to know what is in our hearts. So this day we offer our gratitude for those special favors you have brought us in recent times . . .

Scripture tells us to “Cast all your cares upon him, because he cares for you.” And because you care so deeply for us, help us to extend your care far beyond our front doors. May we be open to sharing financially, carrying another’s burden, listening to another’s dreams, and by meeting Jesus in each person we encounter.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Living God, we thank you for words – spoken and read – for they encourage, inspire, and help us build community. Listen now as we offer these prayers, spoken from deep within the souls of our friends at Church Street. Place your hand of healing where it is needed, and speak a word of hope to each longing heart:

  • Parents are thankful that their NC families are all safe, well, and working
  • Gratitude: Though profits are small, owners of a small business are thankful they have remained open during the pandemic
  • Gratitude for all who make phone calls to our homebound members
  • Traveling mercies for a member who moves to Franklin, TN today
  • A son in DC, separated from his fiancée, who is a hospital ER doctor
  • Courage for church families enduring financial and emotional stress
  • Parents under great strain; healing and help for three adult children who suffer emotional and psychological maladies
  • A friend in isolation at home, positive for COVID-19
  • Prayers for an adult son to enter a drug rehab program
  • Healing for a young cousin with lymphoma at St. Jude’s
  • An uncle in Illinois with pre-existing conditions suffers from COVID-19
  • Peace for loved ones nearing death, peace for grieving family members
  • Depressed and isolated family members locked down in nursing homes and assisted living facilities
  • Prayers for success as state, nation and world open business establishments, and that the virus will not flare up again as we interact

Walk beside us today, O Loving One, and though we may stumble, keep us on that straight path of promise.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Generous Friend, you have gathered us into your beloved community, and we thank you for allowing us to be among those who pray today the words of your Blessed Son:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation!

We offer our praise to you this morning, for you offer us this day with all its possibilities. We enter these first hours of light, bringing with us our own stories, our hopes, and our fears. Prepare our hearts, Generous God, that we might recognize and receive the goodness you have already planted at our fingertips. May we also examine our souls in these moments, offering our sincere regrets and remorse . . .

Wipe away all our misdoings that have come before, for we are your cherished ones, and you are ever willing to offer us a day of new beginnings.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, we remember that through your words and touch, those who were distressed found peace and those who were tormented found rest. You wept over the city you loved, and you shed tears when your own friend Lazarus died. As our own Wounded Healer, who shares our mourning and our grief, bless all who are engaged in healing ministries during this time of trouble: those who work in hospitals and hospices, nursing homes and assisted living residences; for nurses, technicians, doctors, chaplains, and counselors; for peacekeepers, priests, and pastors. Through your healing grace, uphold all who love you, all who seek you, and all who need you.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Most particularly, hear us now, as we voice these petitions on behalf or our church family — our thanksgivings and also our prayers of pain and concern — which we lift up to your listening ear:

  • Physician parents give thanks: their young children remain healthy
  • Praises: a very ill sister has been granted release from the hospital
  • Grandparents rejoice in being able to spend more time with a bright and beautiful young grandson
  • Prayers appreciated: no new cancer cells discovered in today’s scans
  • Gratitude: Daughter in PA (nurse) with COVID-19 is feeling much better
  • Courage for church families enduring financial & emotional stress
  • Parents under great strain; healing and help for three of their adult children who suffer emotional and psychological maladies
  • A mother and adult children in conflict, for understanding & healing
  • Prayers for an adult son to enter a drug rehab program
  • Four faithful churchwomen who are undergoing cancer treatments
  • Peace for a friend with rectal cancer as she faces surgery next week
  • Healing prayers for an 8-yr-old cousin with lymphoma at St. Jude’s
  • An uncle in Illinois with pre-existing conditions suffers from COVID-19
  • Peace for loved ones nearing death, peace for grieving family members
  • That job openings may come soon, as the virus threat lessens

We depend upon you always, Healing God, for we know that wherever there is love and caring, you are also there.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Jesus, our Friend, be with us this day and every day, for all that we have, all that we are, and all we hope to be, we offer in your name:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Most Holy Sustainer, forgive us when we do not pause to thank you for the ways in which you continue to care for us. Forgive us when we gamble away the resources and talents you have provided. Teach us to live in a spirit of thanksgiving – not for one day each year, but every day. Help us to measure our blessings in love, peace, faith, and family.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Blessed God, in this season of restless waiting, we might easily lose sight of you. We focus on the latest news bulletin, podcast and commentary; then we begin pacing and wringing our hands. Some days we hardly notice you at all. But you still come to us one by one: healing, forgiving, comforting, restoring life, and offering hope to all who are poor in spirit. Come to us now, we pray, for we are worn down and weary of the journey.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Gatherer of the Beloved Community, we thank you for our church family. As baptized believers, we have promised to support and pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ. So receive into your heart these gratitudes and concerns that we offer this day:

  • Thanksgiving that a granddaughter has completed all her college graduation requirements
  • Gratitude for our church youth who continue to concentrate on volunteer activities even though they are homebound
  • Grateful for church friends who are reaching out to the poor and needy
  • Son in Florida who has been furloughed from his work
  • Prayers for an adult son to enter a drug rehab program; for his child and family bearing the burden of his poor choices
  • Prayers that a dear friend’s scans today show no sign of cancer cells
  • Peace for a friend with rectal cancer as she faces surgery next week
  • Healing prayers for an 8-yr-old cousin with lymphoma at St. Jude’s; for his family members who cannot visit until virus tests prove negative
  • An uncle in Illinois with pre-existing conditions suffers from COVID-19
  • Daughter in Pennsylvania, healthcare worker, who tested positive for COVID-19
  • A sister-in-law in Atlanta hospital after a fall, now on a ventilator
  • Peace for loved ones nearing death, peace for loved ones who wait
  • Strength for church families under great financial & emotional stress

In the hours to come, O Lord, pour out abundant grace upon our church members and all whom we love.  Remember our earnest petitions, for we humbly offer them in the name of the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Jesus, we remember, called out to Mary in her grief as she wept beside the empty tomb. This day, we ask that you might call out our names as well, reminding us that we are not alone. Perhaps you will speak to us through the whisper of the wind, the streaks of blue appearing in a cloudy sky or within the ripples of light on a puddle of rain. As we manage our present struggles, keep us poised to listen, as did Mary; and like that great woman of faith, also make us worthy witnesses to your Easter grace.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

All-knowing God, you know us, and you understand who and what we are. Before any words are uttered, you know already what it is that delights our hearts, and what saddens and disturbs us. You are aware of the harsh and bitter words we have spoken and the ways in which we have hurt others.  Hear our private confessions which we now offer to your ear alone . . .

Jesus said: I forgive you; I love you; Go and sin no more. Write those words upon our hearts, we pray, that we might turn our backs on what is past.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of All Hopefulness, when we turn to our God who is the rock that shelters us, we know we are safe from all that threatens. And so, with hopeful hearts, we lay before you these prayers from our church family. For certain we are weakened and tense, but we believe in the One who will answer us in due time, and will turn our mourning into dancing:

  • Thankful for prayers: friend who had emergency surgery is now home
  • Grateful for word that loved ones in seclusion in NC are safe
  • A daughter working in China remains in good health
  • Thankful: a diabetic brother is heeding virus protection regulations
  • Pray for all who are locked away in assisted living facilities, for family and friends who long to visit, touch, and support their loved ones
  • A frontline healthcare worker who misses her young son; he remains with family in Chattanooga, for his protection from COVID-19
  • For resolve to share bountifully what we have with our brothers and sisters who find themselves in financial need
  • Church families enduring stress and heavy financial worries
  • A sister-in-law in an Atlanta hospital after a fall, now on a ventilator
  • Healing for a daughter – symptomatic of COVID-19
  • Peace for a very ill mother, strength for a daughter who stands by
  • Distressed friend who must have more chemo and radiation treatments
  • Our private prayers of gratitude and guidance

May the Light of God keep us, the power of God sustain us, and the caress of God heal us.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy Lord, beginning today, increase our gratitude, erase our apathy, and deepen our commitment, that our very lives might become signs of the kingdom for which we pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

As the sun rises, so does our prayer of thanksgiving to you, Loving God. With each new dawn, revive our trust in you.  Watch over us this Sabbath, that we might be teeming with abundant gratitude for even the smallest thing we may take for granted: the aroma of freshly brewed coffee; the pet who jumps up to share affection; green leaves shimmering from overnight showers; loved ones who know our flaws, yet love us still; access to online worship and praise, the promise of better days ahead. For your ever-flowing grace, we praise you.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Faithful One, even in our virus struggle, you have offered us relief from our noisy and confusing existence; you have taught us that in the silence we discover you are breathing in us and for us. We long for the time when we may again gather with friends and engage in productive work. Still, what will we do with these gifts once the rushing pace begins anew? Will we leave them behind as we sprint to make up for lost time; or will we remember to set a daily hour to commune with you, to ponder your immeasurable love? O Wounded One, heal us. O Enlightened One, transfigure us. O Cleansing One, sweep through us — for Christ’s sake.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Forgive us through Christ, for whatever wrongs we have done, particularly these we now name . . .

Strengthen our souls to walk and serve you this day with pure hearts. And also we bring these most recent prayers offered by our brothers and sisters at Church Street:

  • Gratitude for a caring employer who allows me to work from home
  • Thanksgiving for a happy marriage and wedding anniversary today
  • Gratitude for an upcoming retirement
  • Giving thanks: devoted friend had successful emergency surgery Saturday
  • Prayers for a young man trying to keep his broadcasting business afloat
  • Family struggling with stress – personal grief and business worries
  • A sister-in-law in critical condition – Atlanta Piedmont Hospital
  • Loved ones who have lost their jobs, for help to arrive soon
  • Healing for a daughter – symptomatic of COVID-19
  • Peace for a very ill mother, strength for a daughter who stands by
  • A friend who has just learned her doctors are ordering more chemo and radiation treatments for her

Almighty God, continue to work within us to free us from anxieties over those things we cannot control. May we hold onto your assurance that, at your appointed time, you will turn our sorrow into joy.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Accept all these, our earnest pleas, for we lay them at your throne of grace in the name of your Risen Son, whose resurrection song still plays in our hearts:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

How long, O Lord, how long? The cry of the ancient psalmist has become our cry as well. You ever call us to move forward, but the future seems dim and our steps are tentative. We need your hand to hold as we travel this shaded road, for in your light we see light. Move with us to steady us. Together we will lift our heads high, knowing that you will bring us through this valley to that place where we are a far more grateful, kind, and trusting people.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O One Who Bids Us Follow, sometimes in the quiet hours, we feel anew your gentle nudge to make a difference. We long to do so, but there are so many needs and causes made known to us, and new ones every day, that we become overwhelmed. Forgive us, Lord, and let us remember that Jesus did not touch or heal everyone, and yet he made an astounding difference. So give us strength to continue to pattern our lives after his, doing what we can. And all who see us reaching out in love will know we serve a Lord whose love knows no end.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

And now, on bended knee, as your church family, we ask that you hear these situations that dwell in our minds and hearts:

  • Gratitude for prayers, a physician son in NC and family remain virus free
  • Gratitude: friends are receiving unemployment checks
  • Easing of loneliness for loved ones homebound and in assisted living
  • Prayers for a church family under great stress
  • Son who has lost his job
  • A nurse who is symptomatic of COVID-19, for healing
  • Prayers for a friend, that April 27 cancer scans will be negative
  • Strength for a daughter as she cares for her very ill mother
  • Easing of pain for a cancer victim who suffers daily
  • Kindergarteners who do not understand why they must miss school
  • One who works hundreds of miles away from friends and family
  • Family of the 4-year-old Chattanooga boy who died of injuries sustained in tornado, for financial help for medical bills and rebuilding
  • Prayers for a safe way for at least some jobs to be restored

Bend low to also accept the private gratitudes we offer  this day . . ..

and hear as well our private confessions . . .

Your grace is everlasting and your faithfulness is forever.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant that all our prayers uttered today may stretch up to heaven, for your safekeeping, for one day we shall all live there with our Savior, who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
