Weekly Prayers for the Church Street Family
Week of July 26, 2023
Rev. Catherine Nance
At our Church Council meeting Tuesday night, one of our youth offered the closing prayer. Her words were ….
“Dear Lord, thank you for giving us the opportunity to change our world for the better, even through our basic day-to-day life, Thank you for allowing us to work together as a community. Give us the understanding that our world is truly a gift and we are truly your children. Allow us to know that your presence is always with us even when we are outside of this church building and separated from this congregation.”
We were meeting in the Chapel – a beautiful room – yet, her prayer made me remember that we spend most of our time OUTSIDE of 900 Henley Street! Yet, it is the Holy Spirit and the gift of prayer that keeps us ‘together as a community’ even when we are ‘outside … and separated’ from one another.
Tonight, as we pray, let us imagine the other places where people are gathering …
O God who binds us together, we pray for those who are at home this evening. May the surroundings bring comfort and peace. May they feel safe and know that they are loved.
O God, we pray for those who are outside – literally outside. Those who are sleeping under a bridge or inside an abandoned building. We do not understand the circumstances and so we do not judge; but we pray for their safety Lord. They are your children.
O God, we pray for those who are at camps. Church camps and summer camps are winding down and band camps are in full swing. There are those who have enlisted in the armed services who are at boot camp. We pray for those who are tired, homesick, and hot. We pray for those who have made good friends and are hoping to sustain relationships.
O God, we pray for those who are working this evening. There are many at hospitals, nursing homes, and all-night diners. We often do not think about mail and package sorters and order fulfillers – those faceless people who make our ‘clicking’ appear at the door in a day or two. May they find fulfillment in their work and know that they are doing work we all count on. May they feel your presence in these evening hours.
O God, we pray for those who are on the road – whether on interstate or in the air. We pray for safety and good judgment as people are traveling for work or for vacation. May people who drive and fly for a living know we appreciate them getting people and goods where they need to be.
We pray for those who are sleeping in prisons tonight. It may be just an overnight or it may be the five-hundredth night of many more. Regardless of circumstance, we pray for mercy and that the prisoner knows they are precious in your sight.
O loving God, we thank you for a beautiful sanctuary where we gather on Sundays to pray. We find encouragement and nurture and love in that place. But thank you, Holy Spirit of God, for your presence outside.
We share the prayers that our community of faith has shared ….

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
Weekly Prayer – August 2, 2023

Week of August 23, 2023
“Where did July go?”
That is what we are asking ourselves, O God! You hear it under our breath! You hear it as we put new school schedules in our phone. You hear it as monthly reminders pop up. You hear it as we sit at the traffic light, our eyes filling with tears. Our heart beating a bit faster. Or maybe slower. Where did July go, O God?
Rationally, we know how many days there are. We tell ourselves that you have made each day and therefore it is a gift. But, we have filled the summer months with expectations and hopes; things we were going to get done before children and grandchildren start back to school. This was the summer we were going to spend more time doing … what, O Lord? What was it? What was it we were going to do and learn and finish that leaves us now feeling empty?
So, we begin again, O God who called forth day and night. It is August; not even the first day but the second day! Is it too late to begin re-thinking our days?
Help us to look back over July and remember the connections we had with your spirit. Let us give thanks for air conditioning and for cool drinks and the relief a folded paper fan can bring! There were family gatherings – even in the midst of grief – where we saw your love revealed. Children learned to swim. There were new friends at camp. There was watermelon.
As we look towards the rest of August, we pray for those who need to pay attention to schedules and calendars. For parents and students and teachers; for bus drivers and coaches. We pray for new parents who are going back to work who are painfully aware of how long eight hours really is! We pray for grandparents who are keeping children; that they may have good health and stay strong and sleep soundly at night!
We pray for family and friends whose schedules unraveled with sickness, death, grief, or mental illness. We pray for those who wish time would stand still or time could go back. May they feel your steadiness in this present moment, O God. Help them move forward minute by minute.
May the calendar and time keeping not be a burden O God, but may we see you in our schedule. July and August are both named for kings. May we greet each day with the words – Jesus is my King! Where is God’s Spirit leading me to serve in his kingdom this day?
We thank you for this evening time as we look back over the day and give thanks for your gifts. You have given us the strength to move through this day and to share your love with others. As we prepare for the evening rest, we pray for others in our church family and community ….
We pray for ….
We give thanks for …

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Rev. Tim Best
Almighty God, King of the Universe,
We give you thanks for all the blessings of this day. For rain, for a day where the air feels fresher, and a time to give thanks for all the simple blessings and mercies of this life. Fill us with your Spirit, that we might find your peace and in the midst of whatever challenges, sufferings, or trials we face. Renew us by your grace as the rain renews dry soil. Grow in us a deep well of trust, built upon the foundations of your work in and through Christ Jesus.
We pray for the leaders of the world, our nation, and our community. Grant wisdom to all those who hold authority over others. Write mercy upon the hearts of all those who make decisions every day that shapes the lives of others. Shape us to choose and live mercifully, so that when we hold power over others we would treat them as Christ himself would treat them. Purge from our hearts all malice and anger, and fill us instead with a commitment to love and care for others.
Our hearts are heavy for all those who grieve the loss of loved ones. We pray for that day when all death will be swallowed up and defeated. We trust that in Christ we can already experience a glimpse of the eternal life which he promises through his resurrection. Comfort those who grieve, be with those who are sick and grant that your church would be with those who are alone. We praise you for drawing close to your creation, even when we have stepped away from you. Draw us together into your kingdom now and in the age to come. We lift all our joys and concerns to you, gracious Lord.
We invite you to pause with us to hold everyone who is hurting in our hearts. Hear our prayer now as we pray that prayer that Christ our Lord has taught us….
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Weekly Prayer – July 12, 2023

Week of July 12, 2023
Tonight’s prayer is the one offered by Pastor Tim Best last Sunday.
“Come to me all who are weary carrying heavy burdens; I will give you rest ….”
Matthew 11:28
Almighty God,
We praise you for the love and concern you show to all your creation. You have made us to rejoice and to mourn, to cry and to laugh. By the burden of discipleship we are freed from the need to conform to this world. We can name suffering when the world calls us to ignore it. We can rejoice with abandon and hope over even the littlest of gifts. Grant that we would faithfully seek the rest that can be found only in you. For those who are weary, and whose souls are in need of much rest, grant them your peace.
When we think of the burdens of others, our hearts become heavy. We pray for those who are burdened with illness, loneliness, grief, and fear. We pray for those who daily face the burden of oppression and hatred. Fill us with your love that we may offer compassion and understanding to all the world, and all those who carry heavy burdens. Free us to joyful obedience to you that we may work to lift and carry the burdens of others as a sign of your kingdom.
We pray for the world, its nations, leaders, and peoples. For those at war, we pray for peace. We pray for our enemies and those who would count our nation and people as enemies. We pray not only for people and nations, but we pray for every part of the world. Make us mindful stewards of our resources and caretakers of the creatures you have placed alongside us.
Gracious God,
We pray for all of those who have been burdened by death. We place our trust and hope in you, that you will raise them and us to new life. Help us to keep before us the lives of those who have trusted your yoke in previous generations, that we might learn from them how to follow you.
We pray for …
We give thanks for …
We continue to pray for …
We join our prayer with theirs now as we pray that prayer that you taught us, saying,
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

You know us so well, O God. It is tempting to jump down to the prayer concerns—not stopping to pray. We want to see the concerns. We ask, “Is it anyone I know? Is my request listed there?’
We are thankful for the opportunity and gift of intercessory prayer, but make us mindful first of the posture of prayer before we focus on the details of the Who and the What. Make us pause to remember that prayer is your gift to us. Help us to stop, be quiet, and acknowledge your presence and your grace in our lives. We open ourselves to you, O God, before we make the lists of things we need or want to do in response to these concerns. Help us to feel the nurturing you offer us as we wait to formalize tasks.
We are amazed at your omniscience – that you know what is on our heart and on the hearts and minds of everyone. How do you hear all those prayers? There we go again! We want to figure out how prayer ‘works,’ instead of simply basking in your presence. How does it work, O God? We pray for individuals who are near and dear to us and we know all about their struggles. We pray for people we do not know – a name on a prayer list, a friend of a colleague. They say our prayers make a difference. We pray for ’your world’ and mention mass shootings and Ukraine. Do they make a difference, O God?
Forgive us when we see prayer as a means to an end – a process to a result. We know that prayer can make a difference. We pray that the difference will be in us O God. We pray that in taking this time to be open to your Spirit, to make room for your breath in our being, that we will be transformed.
So now, we take the list below, O God, and place them in your heart, knowing that they are already there! Somehow, our heart is opened as we reach towards yours. Is that how prayer works, O God?
Forgive us – love us – grant us your grace –
Thank you for the transformation that praying for one another can bring.

MAD in the City 2023
YouthMAD in the City Info
MAD in the City is almost here!! We are looking forward to a week of serving our city together. Below, you’ll find a packing list and general schedule.
Here are some important notes I’d like to bring to your attention.
MAD in the City (which stands for Making a Difference in the City) is a way for us to intentionally be the hands and feet of Jesus in our own community. We will be working with Wesley House Community Center, Beacon of Hope, Emerald Youth Foundation, Operation Backyard, and many of the ministries within Church Street. Students will have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of mission work. Join us in prayer as we ask for protection, stamina, joy, and impact as we do our best to love our neighbors well.
As always, if you have any questions, send them my way! Looking forward to a great week together!
Grace and peace,
Jenny
P.S. You will probably receive another email or two from me before the week is done.

Rev. Andy Ferguson
This prayer was given by Rev. Andy Ferguson on Sunday, June 25 during the Sunday School hour in the Open Door class.
A Prayer for Holy Wonder
God of Creation’s first morning,
God of our children’s first prayer.
We confess that we hardly dare to believe in the holy any longer.
The world counts value in dollars – even though a dollar doesn’t buy much
— even at the Dollar General Store.
Existence is measured in tons of concrete required,
while heart and commitment go unnoticed.
Too often, the solemn ceremonies by which we marry our sweethearts
or bury our dead or baptize our babies,
Seem more like pretty distractions, counting for little.
Instead of a binding commitment made before the God of the Universe.
And doubting your holiness, we doubt our humanness, our realness,
even our eternal worth.
Rise up, O God, stir across the land once again.
Call the thunder to announce your coming!
Silence the proud claims of kings and presidents by your voice,
Send prophets to declare, “Thus saith the Lord…”
Send a friend to inquire, “How it is with your soul?”
Let your holiness, O God, be seen — that we may believe once more.
Cure our chosen blindness to your movement.
Silence us by your certain coming.
Scare us to death that we may catch a glimpse of what it is to live.
Then, we will live our days with a sense of expectation.
We will bear witness to all that we have seen.
We will live confident that with you, “All things are possible.”
We will exult in your certain presence like children dancing in a summer rain shower.
Let us see once more, O God of heaven and earth,
You — bending near to hear the prayers of children,
You — waiting patiently for us to turn and realize…
You – going before us in the march to a better world.
Let us see you,
–as clearly as Moses saw the burning bush on the mountain,
–And Isaiah saw the vision of heaven.
–As clearly as the disciples saw the face of Jesus.
It is in the Holy Name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
We pray for ….

Rev. Catherine Nance
On this night of Summer Solstice, I am inspired by the hymn writer, Kathleen Thomerson, and offer her words here ….
I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus.
God set the starts to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus!
I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus.
Clear Sun of Righteousness, shine on my path, and show me the way to the Father.
In him there is no darkness at all!
The night and the day are both a like.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God.
Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus!
[UMH #206, K. Thomerson, 1966]
O God of Light, with your voice you called forth a way for us to see out of the darkness. Your voice gives us a path and direction.
We thank you for the gift of creation which gives us a sense of rhythm, a way to keep time; we are thankful for both day and night. There is something healing, though, about the sun, Creator God! Thank you for the way you have ordered the planets. Thank you for scientists and astronomers who study the skies and help us to understand that we are not the center of the universe! Thank you for the creation of this planet that offers us life!
O God, for those who are experiencing darkness of any kind, reveal your light!
Darkness of despair, bring the light of hope!
Darkness of disease, shine your healing light!
Darkness of shame; bring redemption and release!
Darkness of sin, shine mercy!
Darkness of regret, shine new beginnings
Darkness of death, give us the assurance of eternal life.
We thank you for the extra bit of daylight today, O God!
May your light shine in us and through us!
May our living always reflect the Light of your Love!

Rev. Tim Best
God of Abraham,
We thank you for the many blessings you pour out upon us. We are thankful for summer camps for children, sunny days outside, rainy nights that seem to leave the world refreshed the next morning. We are thankful that you desire to bless the world, and draw each of us close to you. Help us to hear the ways you are calling each of us. Help us to name our blessings and to share them with the world.
We pray for those who do not feel blessed. We pray for those who are struggling. For those who struggle with sickness, with loneliness, with relationships, and those who are facing any sort of trouble. We pray for those who are oppressed or ignored. You called Abraham from of his home and promised him a future. Be with those who have no home and worry about their future. May we see the blessedness in all people, and share the promise of your future with all the world. Abraham and Sarah trusted in you as they left everything they knew. Help us to trust in you and be willing to follow you wherever you call us.
How wonderful it was to see our future, the youth of Church Street, lead the music in worship this week. We are truly a blessed community to have dedicated staff, volunteers, and students, committed to praising and glorifying you through song. We are so thankful that our youth returned safely from their choir tour. We know that many others were blessed by their performances last week, just as we were blessed to hear them this past Sunday. Continue to bless and teach our youth and children through all of our programs this summer. We have already been so richly blessed by our children and youth, watch over them as they continue to bless and teach us as a church family.
Gracious God, we know that Jesus Christ is the fullest revelation of your love for Abraham and for the world. Through Jesus the whole world is blessed by Abraham. In Jesus the whole world is invited into Abraham’s family. In Jesus we see that you keep your promises and that even when it seems that only death remains, your love bursts forth into newness of life. Grant that we may always cling to the hope of your mercy and grace.

Help us to always see the blessings in our lives, as we pray that prayer the Jesus taught us…

Good evening friends! I am at Lake Junsaluksa, North Carolina attending the Holston Annual Conference along with Pastor Tim and our lay members. It has been a glorious time of worship and hearing reports about what is happening in our conference. “Recalibrating” is the key word for the conference and forward-looking positivity is the energy in the room. I want to share with you today some of the prayers that have been offered here. You are part of this meeting although you are not here physically. The Holy Spirit always connects us through prayer. – Pastor Catherine
BREAKTHROUGH PRAYER for Holston Conference (You can insert ‘CSUMC’ or ‘our family’ or ‘me’ where the prayer mentions ‘conference.’)
Gracious God, we know that you are with us and you are for us. Together we pray:
Prayer offered at ordination service (we were reminded by our Bishop that we have ALL been called at our baptism to be in ministry). This was the prayer for those ordained elders:
Give to these your servants the grace and power they need to serve you in this ministry. Make them faithful pastors, patent teachers, and wise counselors. Enable them to serve without reproach, to proclaim the gospel of salvation, to administer the sacraments of the new covenant, and to offer with all your people spiritual sacrifices acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Below is a portion of the prayer offered at the Memorial Service where we remembered clergy and spouses who have died since last year’s Annual Conference. Many of us who read these Wednesday prayers continue in our grief.
Months or years may have passed, and still we feel near to them. Our hearts yearn for them. Though bitter grief has softened, duller pain abides; for the place where once they stood is empty now. The links of life are broken, but the links for love and longing cannot break. Their souls are bound up in ours forever. We see them now with the eye of memory, their faults forgiven, their virtues grown larger. So does goodness live, and weakness fade from sight. We remember them with gratitude and bless their names. Their memory is a blessing forever.
Dear God who hears our prayers whether they are whispered by an individual or read in unison in sanctuary, we thank you for the privilege we have in being able to communicate with you. We are thankful you desire to be in communion with us. Stir up in us the acknowledgement of our responsibility in carrying out and living out the prayers we bring before you. In the power of our Risen Savior we pray, Amen.
